Is there any way to check and see if a name is taken before the event starts?

Nope, but its not like there are tens of hundreds of thousands of people already registered(who pre-order) so unless you pick a really popular, non-original name you should get whatever you want.

*sigh* so many people with no originality...

You should use blademaster as your last name, like Genhi Blademaster. Last name should be common, first name original, like in real life (usually) i get tired in other games of seeing all the people with "blade" in their names, i mena some on, you not THAT badass.
